Solana Whales Bet Big on Upcoming Upgrade Amid Bearish Market Signals
Solana's upcoming network upgrade on September 9 is a clear vote of confidence from major investors, as evidenced by the $9.11 million in long positions taken by whales. This substantial investment underscores a belief in Solana's potential to outperform, even as the broader futures market maintains a bearish stance on the cryptocurrency.
The upgrade will expand Solana's transaction size capacity from 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, more than tripling the current limit. This change aims to reduce structural bottlenecks by allowing multiple transactions to be bundled into one, potentially enhancing Solana's competitiveness against Ethereum (ETH).
However, the broader futures market reflects skepticism. Solana's funding rate has turned negative, and the long-short account ratio is at 0.92, suggesting a preference for short positions. Additionally, futures trading volume has decreased by 16% to $6.53 billion, with open interest slightly down by 1.21% to $6.47 billion.
Despite these bearish indicators, institutional interest remains steady. Solana exchange-traded products have seen 10 consecutive weeks of inflows, indicating that some investors still believe in the network's long-term prospects, even as derivatives activity declines.
