Solana Activates SIMD-0286, Increasing Compute Capacity by 66%
Solana's decision to double its compute capacity from 60 to 100 million units per block is a strategic move that positions it as a leader in blockchain scalability. By increasing transaction throughput by 66%, Solana not only enhances its network efficiency but also strengthens its appeal to developers and businesses seeking robust and scalable blockchain
The upgrade was facilitated by the adoption of XDP, a network bypass-kernel mode that accelerates block propagation. Over 70% of validator stakes had to activate XDP for SIMD-0286 to be implemented, ensuring the network could handle the increased load without issues.
Despite the increased compute capacity, certain network parameters remain unchanged. Slot times are still set at 400 milliseconds, and the account data limits per block are capped at 100 megabytes, maintaining network stability and data integrity.
While Solana's current transaction volumes do not yet reach the previous cap, the additional headroom prepares the network for future spikes in activity, such as those anticipated from projects like Alpenglow. This strategic upgrade positions Solana to manage higher transaction volumes efficiently.
